Midnight Adventures

No matter how much you love your family, sometimes you have to get away from them, or someone ends up in tiny pieces in a garbage bag in the woods. (Do you really think it’s a coincidence that most people are killed by someone they know?)

Anyway, a friend of mine was starting to get more than a little too tightly wound for her own good, so she made use of my guest room on Friday night. After a long bath, some dinner, and a quiet evening, she stumbled off to bed more relaxed than I’ve ever seen her. Everything seemed to be going well.

Until shortly after midnight, when I got a call from her house, saying that her mother hadn’t returned from a 2:00 PM doctor’s appointment. I seriously debated not waking her up at all, and telling the other adults who were already awake anyway to deal with it themselves. Unfortunately, knowing what I do of the parties involved, they’d just keep calling until they got satisfaction. Very reluctantly, I tiptoed into the room to convey the message.

Fortunately, her mother was utterly unscathed by nine hours of wandering around a local superstore (which is more than I can say for my prospects under the same circumstances). My friend managed to get twelve nearly uninterrupted hours of sleep, and went home feeling better, if not as well as she ought. I was annoyed all out of proporation on my friend’s behalf, though. You wouldn’t think that it would be so hard to get one night’s uninterrupted sleep a month.
