I’ve always been curious about why people are drawn to study psychology. Most people in that field who I’ve met usually tell me one of two things—either they are curious about how people think, or they had a very positive experience with therapy and want to help others. So, on our first date, when I found out that Ed has a degree in psychology, I asked him what drew him into that field of study.
“I want to talk to really crazy people,” he told me. “I want to understand out why people have sex with vacuum cleaners.”
I blinked. And I must admit that the first thought that went through my mind was Well, the fact that he doesn’t understand why people have sex with vacuum cleaners is probably a good sign. In hindsight, of course, I think that my reaction says a lot more about the people I used to date than it does about Ed.
