Bourne Again

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

I’m picky about my action flicks, and skeptical of sequels. A lot of critics are raving about The Bourne Ultimatum, and while I’m not sure I agree that it’s better than #1 and/or #2, it’s at least as good as the first movie…and that’s good enough for me.

There’s lots of the trademark shaky-cam in the action sequences, and while I understand that the point is realism, it makes it hard to follow the action sometimes. However, there’s all the action we’ve come to expect, and then some. I also liked the fact that a couple of female characters actually did the smart thing in their chase sequences—destroying the GPS-tracked cell phone, and making the best use of a fax machine in a film since Office Space.

Overall, Bourne 3 is a series of chase sequences strung on a thin plot without a lot of subtlety, but it’s a good ride and I enjoyed it.

You Can Lead a Horse to Water, But You Can’t Make Him Think

Me: You can’t beat sense into people; I’ve tried.

M: You can beat the stuffing out of them, though.

Me: That only makes room for sense.

Bad Haircut

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Poor Minx hasn’t been doing a good job grooming himself, and he ended up so full of mats and tangles that all we could do was…well…this.

Actually, we paid someone else to do it. There are some things you should just pay someone else for.

The very patient lady who did the deed wasn’t even able to finish the job, for all the hissing and claw swipes; he’s still got a big tangle under his chin, but he was quite definitely done for the day. However, I’m told we can bring him back in a couple of days, after he’s calmed down, and try to finish the job.

He’s never going to forgive me for that.

And I’m sure it’s a complete surprise to nobody that Magnus has no idea what to make of it all. I could just hear him thinking “Dude, what happened to your hair?”

Supporting my local musicians…

Wild Mercy and Alair invite you to an evening of great Celtic music Saturday August 25, 7:00-10:00, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 W. 43rd St., just south of the Butler campus. The Alair Celtic quartet will open, followed by Wild Mercy; the bands share a harpist.

Alair (harp, flute, cello, violin) specializes in traditional Celtic music and gives their sound and arrangements a classical feel. Wild Mercy (harp, guitar, bass, keyboard, percussion, vocals) plays traditional and contemporary Celtic with an eclectic twist and tight vocal harmonies. Tickets: $6 in advance, $8 at the door, $5 for students, 12 and under free. Come for an evening of some of the best Celtic music in town in a smoke-free coffee house setting and find out why this concert is billed as “Six Women and a Giraffe.” Info: 251-8099 or www.wildmercy.com.

So Far, So Good

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Now that we’ve gotten our location settled, we’ve been looking for other wedding vendors. We’re set to go with flowers; one of our friends does absolutely gorgeous work, and has graciously agreed to provide his services. The band is available on the day in question. Catering is probably going to be a DIY affair. We’re not crazy enough to try and do the actual cooking ourselves, but it looks like take-away will be the order of the day rather than having someone on site. Tent rental is tentative right now, but we’re investigating options.

Next up, finding a baker for the cake, and a photographer.

Signs

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

I knew it wasn’t going to be the best week ever when the sh!t hit the fan twice within the space of 30 minutes on Monday.

I ended up driving across town twice that day, worked unplanned OT at the end of the day, missing acupuncture, and that was just to deal with one hit. There wasn’t anything I could do about the other one; more’s the pity.

On Tuesday, I ended up taking home two high-priority items to work on, and didn’t finish work until nearly 10:00 PM. Of course, part of that was because I stopped to take a yoga class and eat dinner (I’m dedicated, but not THAT dedicated). I had a 20-hour week in by the time I was done.

Fiancé, meanwhile, has been covering the late shift at the place where he volunteers. This is on top of volunteering 40 hours a week, mind you. He’s been covering evenings since last Friday, and has been asked to be available all of this week. Now, covering the evening shift is actual paying work (don’t ask), so there’s that, and it’s the sort of thing that helps convince board members that they do indeed want to hire him. And yet…IMNSHO, it is asking rather a lot of a volunteer, all the same.

I think the universe is telling us to take Friday afternoon off.

Yes, that must be it.
